Dear UbuntuStudio
I know there's tons of applications of the last post, but I thought there wasn't much in the way of GPL'd implementations. Today, I saw this awesome screenshot, from the audio-visual program CLAM:

The above comes from their Qt based Network Editor application. This is hardly unique among audio applications -- I recall seeing graphEdit years ago on Windows. But I think perhaps there's some great underlying functionality ready to break out for wider uses. Ohloh suggests that it's a mature application with lots of developers, but few comments. CLAM is one of Google's 2008 SoC projects, and some interesting new functionality is on the way thanks to that. One project in particular sounds as useful outside the audio domain: Network Scalability, by Natanael Olaiz (mentor, Pau Arumí). Basically, writing the infrastructure to allow sub-networks, and sub-sub-networks etc. He appears to be making good progress, and I hope he succeeds!

(This is why I always say everything you've ever thought of has already been done on the Internet.)

Very sorry, I put it in as a working title and forgot to make sure it made sense before posting. But it still works; the package as is seems relevant to Studio's goals and isn't in Ubuntu repos yet. If any Studio people don't have their hands full then making contact with the group might be a good way to get CLAM to improve their package to the point where it's acceptable for inclusion, and Studio developers can aid in some small way in making their platform more accessible to upstream developers, if simply by making themselves available for questions etc. I know Ubuntu managed to not be part of SoC 2008, but CLAM is and at least one developer has chosen UbuntuStudio Feisty as his platform for development.

Another developer pointed me to the package ams, so there's no direct need for Ubuntu Studio to get involved simply because they're missing a kind of program, but I don't think ams is long for this world. Given that CLAM already builds, packages and hosts their own .debs, it seems like Debian and friends is a road block rather than a green light in the path between users and developers, but I think a friendly reach out by MOTU or UbuntuStudio might be encouraging.

Hope someone at ubuntu and debian hears you call. Ubuntu defers wisely to debian, but it is being hard to get the packages into debian. Involved debian developers are too busy and the package have been stalled by nearly two years. So please, if any debian packager is reading that, rescue them!!
